Lake Metigoshe

So this post should have fallen in front of my last post on Teddy Roosevelt National Park, but apparently I was super lazy and forget, as much as I LOVE the photos that I got.

Anyways, my brother Cameron was up here for a week and a half or so just hanging out, so as well as going to the national park with a couple other cool dudes we rented a cabin up at Lake Metigoshe state park here in North Dakota, right on the Canadian border. Needless to say, it was a bit snowy.

So a very black, white, grey, and orange post for today. All the photos in this post were taken with either my Fujifilm X-T1 Graphite or my old X-Pro1 (taking it out for one more outing before the X-Pro2 comes and completely replaces it.) I decided at the last minute to take my much lighter Fuji gear as opposed to my Nikon gear. Man am I glad I did. I also let my brother borrow one of my X-T1s and a lens because his Nikon D7000 broke on him and we had to send it to be fixed.

We got a ridiculously nice cabin (albeit without the luxury of running water), but compared to our usual digs of tents and yurts with no power it felt like the Ritz-Carlton. Very very nice to stay at up there, and I'm sure it is booked solid all the way through the summer.

After hanging out in the cabin for a little bit after a relatively long drive up there from Bismarck we decided to tromp around in the snow and see what we could find. It was a winter wonderland with probably about 1-2 feet of snow, but we decided to forego the snowshoes in favor of boots. Also, while there was a lot of snow, it was actually relatively warm the whole time. Go figure.

I just basically spent the whole time we were walking taking photos of my brother, since he is quite photogenic in all his orange, it made a very nice counterpoint to the grey world of the snow.

Right starting off I was able to quickly capture one of my favorite subtle scenes.

Despite the whole world being grey, there was still plenty of snippets of color to be had, which was generally what I was focusing on while we were out exploring.

Of course there were also plenty of black and white scenes. Literally looking through my viewfinder on this shot I had to check that I hadn't turned on the black and white simulation mode. I hadn't, it was just so devoid of color that it tricked me. Sneaky.

My brother was always willing to be my subject as we were walking, though, so I ended up with a lot of very nice shots of him. With his orange.

It was actually a really nice walk around in the snow. Not so cold as to be uncomfortable, but not too warm either. It let me focus more on shooting photos that being annoyed at the cold.  This is one of my favorite shots that I got of a thing, a simple composition of a tree.

I'll leave you with a couple of our portraits, taken by the other, respectively. Also pink ears.

Thanks for reading! I'll work on a post about what we did the next day, which was go to the frozen tundra of the International Peace Gardens! We went to Canada!

Thanks!
